What can I do before court to prepare for my reckless driving case?

Preparing for Your Reckless Driving Case

The most important thing to do is consult with an attorney. You will not always need to hire an attorney, but reckless driving is a criminal offense in Virginia. That means if you're convicted, you will have a permanent criminal conviction. Consulting an attorney will at least provide you with an idea of what you're faced with.

Driving Record

It is also helpful to look up your driving record. Many people are surprised to see what is and what's not on their record. Some charges that you thought were dismissed, might actually be on your record. Some charges you thought would be on your record, might not be. In any event, it's always helpful to at least know what your record looks like.

Speedometer Calibration

Getting the speedometer in your car tested is also an important defense to reckless driving. If you believe that your speedometer is not 100% accurate, you can get it tested to confirm whether it's showing the correct speed. If the speedometer is showing a slower speed, you can show the calibration to the judge. Sometimes the judge will take that into consideration when deciding whether to reduce or dismiss your charge.

Driving Improvement Courses

If you're charged with reckless driving, taking a driving improvement course can help you with a judge. But you should consult an attorney before you take the course. Many judges in Virginia require you take the course after your court date. There are also different kinds of driving courses. Some courses are online and some courses are classroom courses. Some courses are four hours and some are eight. An attorney will be able to tell you which courses are accepted by your court.

Community Service

I recommend speaking with an attorney before you complete community service. It completely depends on the judge. Community service is generally only useful when you're charged with a very high speed.

Preparing for your reckless driving case is important, but you should not go at it alone. At the very least you should consult an attorney. An attorney can give you specific advise about your judge and what things the judge likes to see before court. Be careful what your family members and friends tell you about preparing for your reckless driving ticket. Each county and city in Virginia can be different. It's unlikely that their advise will be useful with your reckless driving ticket.
