Albemarle County Courts

If you've been charged with a crime in Albemarle County, your case will be heard in the Albemarle General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court, or Circuit Court. All of Albemarle County's courts are located in historic Court Square. 

Parking

There is almost no parking directly around Court Square. The best place to park if you are attending any of Albemarle County's courts is at the Market Street garage, about one block south of Court Square. The first hour of parking is free at the Market Street garage. 

Albemarle General District Court

The Albemarle County General District Court is where you will go if you are 18 years or older and you've been charged with a traffic offense or a misdemeanor. Your case will also be heard in the General District Court if you're charged with a felony and arrested on a felony warrant. 

Judge William Barkley presides over the Albemarle General District Court on most days. When he's unavailable a substitute judge will cover the docket for him. He has been presiding as a judge in the area for many years.

Albemarle County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court

The Albemarle County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court is where you will go if you're under 18 and charged with a crime or traffic infraction. You will also go to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court if you're charged with a crime against a minor or a household member.

Albemarle County Circuit Court

The Albemarle County Circuit Court is where you will go if you've appealed your case from the District Court or if the Circuit Court issued a capias for your arrest through a Grand Jury indictment.
